**Dr. Jim’s blog posts focus on many of the often asked questions that are made during plastic surgery consultation and follow-up visits by his patients. These posts may be representative of a particular patient, and individual diagnosis may vary. Dr. Jim, Can Alloderm be used to enlarge my lips? Susan Dear Susan, I tried Alloderm years ago in the lips when it was first introduced. It is absorbed and disappears too soon. It can also create a feeling of tightness in the lips. To overcome the problems the company ground it up and called it Cymetra. That was injectable Alloderm. Ever heard of it? No, because it does not work either. I like to use cumulative fat placement to create a natural lip. Dr. Jim

**Dr. Jim’s blog posts focus on many of the often asked questions that are made during plastic surgery consultation and follow-up visits by his patients. These posts may be representative of a particular patient, and individual diagnosis may vary. Dr. Jim, My friend was gasping when she heard I was getting saline breast implants! What is the difference between Saline and Silicone Breast Implants? Betty Dear Betty, Yes, there are differences between saline and silicone for cosmetic breast augmentation. Silicone implants were removed from the market about 15 years ago for any new cosmetic usage because of a fear of causing systemic lupus or arthritis. Since that fear has yet to be actually proven so the implants are now available only to 21 year olds and older. Personally I never felt silicone caused illnesses but that fight is still on in some sectors. The FDA recommends MRI exams every 3 to 4 years to evaluate silicone implant stability, but we doubt that is complied with by most patients. Companies also want continues data retrieval from the silicone implanted patients about any possible problems with silicone implants. But the silicone is definitely available; about 10 %o of my practice uses […]

By Dr. James Apesos The boom in tanning centers and equatorial vacations are all indicative of our societal desires to obtain a suntan to darken pale light skin. Consequently you may be suffering from sun-damaged skin if you have spent years sun worshipping for a good tan. Irrespective of warnings by dermatologist and plastic surgeons, people persist in obtaining as much sun exposure as possible, particularly early in their lives. Blotchy skin wrinkles, and furrows are all due to aging skin, and sun-destroyed skin. The most rational and sane recommendation is to avoid sunbathing and to use sunscreens. Even if sun exposure is not anticipated a number 15 sun protection factor (SPF) or higher is best used daily. Obviously sun exposure on a ski mountain causes excessive exposure and skin drying but office fluorescent lights will also cause damage. The SPF in products less than number 15 is usually not helpful enough and will not provide much sun blockage. Additionally, a good moisturizer will help to keep your skin healthy. What can you do about the permanent changes in your skin? The most important problem may be formation of skin cancers. Areas of crusting, ulceration, permanent changes in color […]
By Dr. James Apesos Several years ago a TV show titled To Tell the Truth was broadcast on weekly basis. The show presented the audience and panelists with three individuals, one of whom was telling the truth and two of whom were lying about their professions. Today, consumers of medical care are faced with the same dilemma as the panelists on To Tell the Truth. Patients seeking plastic surgery are trying to discern which doctors are lying about their credentials. The public has no way of knowing which doctors are “telling the truth” and which are not. In all medical specialties, particularly those of plastic surgery, heart surgery, eye surgery or cardiology, a doctor’s credentials are examined and scrutinized by physician committees prior to granting them permission to operate in the hospital setting. However, in the realm of “cosmetic plastic surgery,” there is a loop-hole with no protection for the consumer. Any one doctor who would like may advertise as if they are a cosmetic plastic surgeon and practice in a non-hospital location like a private office or surgicenter. Since hospitals cannot regulate what the doctor does in many outpatient settings, the self-appointed plastic surgeon may do any surgery, […]
DID YOU KNOW? Sugar will de-frizz your hair Hairstylist Jenny Cho uses this in-a-pinch trick. On those days when you’re out and about and you realize your hair is a frizzy mess, mix a packet of sugar with a cup of water, pour a bit into your palms, then run hands over any areas of frizz.
DID YOU KNOW? Face cream can reduce stretch marks A cool fact about retinol, we already love in anti-agers: If you rub it on new stretch marks nightly, it may help smooth them and fade their color. Sadly, there is no miracle cream for OLD stretch marks, so try this as soon as one shows up.
In today’s world, people are constantly assessing -and assessed on- their appearance. This has led to a thriving cosmetic surgery industry. Anyone can choose to change nearly anything they want about themselves. Since modern cosmetic surgery started to develop in the early 20’s it has advanced by leaps and bounds, and there are new procedures being devised all the time. From nose jobs and facelifts to breast augmentation and tummy tucks -today plastic surgery is everywhere. Prices vary by city and state, as well as by doctor. A simple breast augmentation averages just under $4000 nationally, but can range from $3000 to over $7000. A tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty) has a very wide range of potential costs due to the options and types available. The lowest end of the range starts at approximately $4500 for smaller incisions, and a complicated procedure could be up to $10,000-$15,000. A typical tuck will be between $5000 and $7000 in most areas. Don’t let price be the determining factor when looking at surgeons. Choosing who will perform this type of surgery on you is a big step, and careful screening is needed. The easiest point to check will be that he is accredited. […]

Breast augmentation surgery is the most popular type of cosmetic surgery performed in the United States each year. According to statistics by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 290,000 women had breast augmentation surgery in 2013, a one percent increase from 2012. What is Breast Augmentation Surgery? Breast augmentation surgery uses breast implants to increase breast size and fullness. Although the most common reason for breast augmentation surgery is cosmetic breast enlargement, it can help women who have breasts that are asymmetrical, different sizes, different shapes, and who experience changes in breasts size or shape after childbirth and breast feeding. Breast augmentation surgery and implants can also be used after injury or mastectomy for breast reconstruction. Types of Implants It’s important to discuss the different types of implants with your surgeon to decide which type and appearance is best for you. There are three basic types of FDA approve implants: Saline – Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water that’s similar to your natural body fluids. They have a flexible fill volume that allows your surgeon to adjust the size during surgery. Saline implants feel soft and natural with uniform firmness. If leaking should occur, saline implants will collapse […]

Aesthetic plastic surgery has become a very popular trend, typically among celebrities and those of high incomes, considering the cost of most procedures, all seeking to enhance their looks in some way. While it is rather common these days, where did plastic surgery begin? The first book on plastic surgery was written in Latin in 1597, entitled De Curtorum Chirurgia per insitionem by Gaspare Tagliacozzi. The first documented breast augmentation was done in 1895 with the first training program in United States established almost three decades later, in 1924, by Dr. John Davis at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Davis was later appointed the first professor of plastic surgery. Aesthetic plastic surgery today includes procedures of all kinds, both cosmetic and reconstructive, from arm lifts to cleft palates to hair replacement. While most of the procedures are surgical, some of them are nonsurgical. If you are considering aesthetic plastic surgery for any reason, be sure to do your research first. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is the perfect place to visit to find information on all procedures, and to find a surgeon near you. Not only is there information, but you can also browse through the articles and galleries on their website to view before and after photos and watch […]
You are looking at yourself in the mirror. You are thinking that it would be nice to touch up some things. After doing a Google search, you find a huge list of Dayton plastic surgeons that can do the work. Are those surgeons the best choice for you? To find out if a plastic surgeon is good for you, the first question that you need to answer; Is the physician board certified? The criterion for a plastic surgeon to become board certified is long and very specific. If the doctor cannot meet any of those requirements then you do not want to work with that physician. The next question you want to ask, how long has the doctor been practicing their particular form of medicine? If you take your car to a mechanic, you do not want someone that has only worked on toy cars; you want someone that has worked on the type of cars that you own. A plastic surgeon is the same, the more experience they have the better chance you have of a successful surgery. Ask the physician about their training, you want them to know the current procedures. The newest techniques may help you […]
If you are preparing to undergo any form of plastic surgery, even if it is nonsurgical, be sure that you are seeking only board certified plastic surgeons. This will better ensure your safety and a successful procedure. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons gives you the ability to search for a surgeon in your area that specializes in the type of procedure you are interested in. All of the surgeons they have listed are board certified plastic surgeons. They have either been certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc. began in 1937 by a group of representatives that were interested in plastic surgery. The board was classified as a major specialty board in 1941 by the Advisory Board of Medical Specialties. Being part of a specialty board, all of their surgeons are held accountable to both the public and their medical profession. In order to become a board certified plastic surgeon with the ABPS, each surgeon must undergo training and pass several exams: written, oral and hand. The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada was founded in 1929,originally to oversee postgraduate medical education, […]

If you’ve got a large stomach with an abnormal amount of fat, you should give a tummy tuck serious consideration. Many have tried to eliminate their stomach fat with sit-ups, crunches, running and diet alterations only to find that the stubborn flab just won’t go away. If you haven’t had any success in eliminating your abdomen’s excess skin, a tummy tuck might be for you. A tummy tuck, also called an abdominoplasty, is a surgery that flattens the abdomen with the removal of excess skin and fat. It does even more than merely remove this extra fat. It also tightens up the muscles of your abdominal wall. However, this is a major surgery so candidates should give it extensive contemplation before choosing to move forward with the operation. Men and women who are in good health are the best candidates for a tummy tuck. It is especially popular for women who’ve had multiple pregnancies. These women often have excessive stomach skin and loose abdominal muscles so they are the prime candidates for tummy tucks. Also, men and women who were obese at one point in their lives are prime candidates as well. They likely have an inordinate amount of fat […]
You’re going to want to show them off; don’t show them off. Exposing your breast augmentation scar prematurely greatly increases your chance of infection. Keeping your bandages clean and dry is probably the most important key in recovering from breast augmentation. The second most important component for a quick recovery is rest and relaxation. Avoid strenuous activity for a solid week. This includes walking, not running, and sleeping on your back. The pain from manipulation of the muscle tissue in the breast cavity is likely to be the worst part of the recovery process and pain killers are generally prescribed for this. Breast augmentation surgery has evolved to become quick and easy, unfortunately complications during recovery may not be detected until unnecessary damage is caused. So eat and sleep right help your body recover on its own. You should also avoid harsh soaps and oils, creams, tanning and anything else that may complicate healing of the scar. If your doctor had prescribed antibiotics, take them. Most patients after surgery fully recover in two weeks and are able to return to work after a weekend of recovery. By taking extra good care the first week of recovery you can expect a quick and easy […]
If a person has sagging skin in the abdomen area, they may want to research the cost of a mini tummy tuck. The procedure removes excess skin from the abdomen, below the “belly button.” Exercise simply does not tighten this flab when the wall of this area has lost elasticity. Fortunately, a mini tummy tuck helps restore the integrity of this stomach wall. History of Procedure and Cost This is a good way to get rid of hard to remove stretch marks on the lower belly. Tummy tucks surgery; professionally known as abdominoplasty, is done to reduce flab on the abdomen, giving it a more streamlined appearance. The average cost of a mini tummy tuck can range from $1500 to $7000. The process is an outpatient visit but some patients feel better in a hospital environment. The healing process can take up four weeks for the average person but healing always varies with the individual. Cost allocations include, anesthesia, doctor’s fees and the cost of the health facility. Bandages and follow up visits are also included in most cost analysis. Many doctors include follow up checks for up to a year or more. Funding the Procedure Financing is on […]
Liposuction is a body contouring surgery that removes unwanted fat with a suction tube, known as a cannula. It is a great option for those who want a specific figure, but have areas on their body that are resistant to exercise and diet. Age, race, genetics, and body type can account for these stubborn fats. Liposuction is a solution for this problem and others. If you are considering this surgery, it is important to be knowledgeable of the process. Understanding the stages of liposuction before and after surgery is helpful when deciding if it is for you. The first step of having a liposuction is scheduling an appointment to meet with a plastic surgeon or dermatologist who is qualified to perform the procedure. At that meeting, you and the doctor will discuss your motivations for surgery, your expectations, and whether the area of fat you wish to have removed is in an operable area. If you are approved for the surgery, scheduling the operation comes next. The article “Liposuction” published in the Indian Journal of Plastic Surgery (2008) simplifies the surgical procedure into four steps. The first step occurs when the surgeon marks the areas of your body that […]
No one can escape the aging process, but having certain types of plastic surgery to correct unattractive loose sagging skin and slack muscles can make us look much younger, dramatically hold back the years, give us confidence, and make us feel on top of the world when we look in the mirror. Two of the most popular types of plastic surgery that are suitable for both men and women, are facelifts and eyelid surgery. Anyone from their mid-thirties up to their seventies, who has acquired loose sagging skin as a result of Mother Time, accumulated UV damage, has fine skin, or had dramatic weight loss, are ideal candidates. When the surgery is performed you undergo a general anesthetic whilst the skin and muscles are tightened and any loose skin is cut. The incisions are made in a precise manner in the hairline and around the ears in order to hide any tiny traces of scarring. The amount of downtime after surgery is quite short, and within a couple of weeks, any swelling or bruising should have disappeared. Naturally, having the procedure undertaken by a registered skilled esthetic plastic surgeon with an established track record is the best course of action. Facelifts […]
Have you considered going under the knife in order to rid yourself of unwanted fat? Perhaps you have had children and your skin sags a bit so you’d like to tighten this up. There are many reasons why you’d decide to have some sort of cosmetic surgery, with two of the most popular being an abdominal liposuction and a tummy tuck. Now, both focus on similar aspects but are different from one another. Due to this, it is helpful to understand what the differences is and how each can help you out. Abdominal Liposuction Liposuction is an excellent way for removing fat from an area of the body where the skin is tight. Usually, this is around the hips area, although it can be done in the abdominal region as well. It all just depends on what your current condition is. With this method, the fat is removed through the use of suction and a tube. If your stomach is already rather tight and you just want to rid yourself of the additional fat, this might be the way to go. Of course, it is always best to consult your medical professional in order to obtain their opinion. Tummy Tuck […]
If you are considering a cosmetic procedure to your body, one of your first questions is probably going to revolve around how much is it actually going to cost? After all, it is likely going to be a new experience for you, so understanding the price is essential. On top of this, your health insurance provider is likely not going to pay for the procedure. This makes knowing what you should pay for plastic surgery all the more essential. Now, it is important for you to keep in mind that a plastic surgeon is going to cost more in major cities, such as New York, Los Angeles or Chicago. There are many varying factors at play, ranging from the cost of running an operation in such a city all the way to how busy such a quality plastic surgeon is. With that being said though, this is a list of the national average for different plastic surgery procedures, according to the Cosmetic Surgery National Data Bank Statistics. Body Procedures Body procedures can range in price rather drastically. Towards the higher end of the spectrum there is a lower body lift, which is going to cost around $6,840. A tummy tuck […]
The history of plastic surgery can be traced back to ancient civilizations. You will be surprised to know that Egyptians practiced it around 3,400BC, and between the years 6BC and 6AD, plastic surgery was recorded in Susruta Samhita, the famous Hindu medical chronicle devoted to plastic surgery procedures. Also, around 1BC, Roman physicians began to carry out plastic surgery on some of the gladiators who returned from battle with serious body and facial injuries that needed attention. When Rome fell at the close of 3AD, a few hundred years went by without any more records of the history of plastic surgery. And then during the Middle Ages, which ran from the 5th to the Century AD, it was forbidden to have any kind of plastic surgery because the church viewed the procedures as sorcery due to the immense power that the surgeon had over his patient. Time moved on, and at the end of the 1500s, the history of plastic surgery carried on, this time in Italy, on the island of Sicily. Here, an Italian named Tagliacozzi pioneered skin grafts when he was attending to someone’s nose that needed a reconstructive procedure. Just as in ancient times, there was no form of anesthetic […]

Cosmetic eyelid surgery is a popular procedure performed in our office. It’s a source of controversy in the Asian-American communities when eyelid surgery is performed on Asian people who don’t have a second eyelid crease. When you are considering having surgery to add a fold to your eyelid to give it a more rounded appearance, also called an Asian blepharoplasty, we have found it’s a personal decision that sometimes has added pressure due to the controversy. The debate centers around the fact that these blepharoplasty procedures target an ethnic group – Asians. Another controversial point is that people of Asian descent who are considering the procedure are accused of wanting to westernize. Since many Asians are born with no crease in their eyelids, the eyelid is stretched tight against the eye. Most people who come in for a consultation with us are simply trying to enhance their appearance; and they want to have that extra fold added for the larger field of vision they gain. Our clients tell us they feel double eyelids are a symbol of beauty. Double eyelids aren’t common, and therefore having eyelid surgery makes them feel more rare and beautiful. It makes the eyes […]
Over time, your abdomen goes through a lot of changes. With weight gain and loss, pregnancy, and lack of exercise, skin stretches and muscles lose firmness leaving you with a saggy, uncomfortable midsection. We can give you a slimmer waistline and flatter stomach with a tummy tuck, but you may want to budget for your tummy tuck cost. 1. Determine Your Surgery Cost A tummy tuck, abdominoplasty, is a major surgical procedure that involves removing excess fat with liposuction, removing excess skin, and tightening stomach muscles. Costs can vary based on procedures, but we can help you determine an accurate cost for your surgery. 2. Ask About Financing Options Typically, a tummy tuck is not covered by insurance, so you should ask about financing options. You may be able to pay with a credit card or financing option that allows you to make installment payments. This can help you spread your tummy tuck cost out over time. 3. Decide on Your Recovery Stay After surgery, you’ll need several days to recover. A hospital recovery stay will probably cost you more than a private in-patient facility. We will recommend the best type of facility for your recovery stay so we […]
After working for many years with women who have had breast implants, many of them have complained about back pains and shoulder slouching. These pains and aches mostly result in surgeries where the implants are inserted under the muscle. It is actually very common for women who have had breast augmentation to complain about back pains after the implant surgery, these pains usually emanate from the upper back. This is because the pectoral muscles, under which the implants are placed, are directly connected to the latissimus dorsi and other back muscles. The pain comes is when these muscles are stretched and distorted by the implants. Due to the immense pain after the surgery, most patients find themselves using their backs, arms and abdomens differently even without realizing it. However, all these goes away with time as your body adjusts and becomes more comfortable. Medication can also be used to hasten the process of relaxing your tensed muscles and reduce pain on a short term basis. Additionally, the natural sleeping postures that most women are used to are altered since they are advised not to lay flat their back or on their side. In days after the operation, the women are […]

Cosmetic Surgery can improve the way you look and work to make you feel better about yourself. But at the same time, it can be an emotionally devastating experience, if someone isn’t mentally fit or has unrealistic expectations, about the way it will turn out. The most common types of Cosmetic Surgery are- Breast Augmentation, Rhinoplasty, (nose reshaping) and Blepharoplasty, (eyelid surgery). They can produce drastic results and it may be important to fully understand what to expect with the outcome. Because the before and after, surgery results can be so radically different- some surgeons do ask certain questions and get to know surgery candidates before operating on them. They may want to know what the patient will want to get out of having the surgery or assess their particular concerns. Typically, surgeons will not do this but in some cases, it may be necessary. When a patient has an unusual concern or worry about a problem that for the most part, does not exist it, may raise a red flag. For example, if someone believes that they are overweight and they are not or if they have already had a series of surgeries to fix problems, that they don’t […]
Many holidaymakers may be jetting off in the summer and one of the things many will be packing is an appointment card to see a plastic surgeon. For many Americans, a nip and a tuck or a nose job are becoming as important as a perfect tan. The number of Americans who are undergoing these procedures is on the rise for the past two years, from bottom lifts in Turkey to dentures in Thailand, most people are preferring these cheaper alternatives coupled with low-cost flights. Eastern Europe has seen the largest number of inflow of American cosmetic tourism. Asian countries such as the Philippines and Other countries such as India, Pakistan and the Dominican Republic have recorded a surge in Americans who are looking for cheap cosmetic surgery. Some of these countries also us banned procedures such as injecting harmful toxic filler substances. Many Plastic surgeons are reporting cases of patients who require corrective plastic surgery after they have operations overseas. The lack of regulation in many countries means that standards fluctuate from one clinic to another and it becomes difficult to assess the performance of a surgeon. It is also important for a surgeon to monitor the patient after […]
For decades, the best way to remove unwanted belly fat or loose skin from child birth has been through an often painful and expensive tummy tuck procedure. Designed to cut away the saggy tissue and tighten up the mid region of the body, women and men have decided to go under the knife to improve their personal body images. However, Coolsculpting provides an alternative to the tummy tuck. The new procedure provides individuals such as yourself with a secondary opportunity to rid your body of fatty tissue while avoiding some of the undesirable aspects of a tuck. You just need to educate yourself on what Coolsculpting is and how it differs from the other options out there. What is Coolsculpting? Coolsculpting is an FDA approved procedure used to freeze fat cells on the body. This safe and effective method targets fat cells underneath the skin and, through a cooling process, freezes the fat cells. Eventually, the targeted fat cells die due to the lack of blood and nutrients required to maintain healthy cell development. As the cells begin to die, the body naturally processes these dead fat cells and removes it from forever. You are born with the exact number […]

Our specialists have passed through extensive training and certification to guarantee patient safety. You should have absolutely no worries about the safety of this revolutionary procedure. Compared to invasive procedures like tummy tucks, Coolsculpting is quite mild in nature. This is precisely why so many people are willing to give Coolsculpting a chance. How Coolsculpting Works Freezing away your body fat might […]
If you are like most Americans, chances are you have a few extra pounds that just never seems to go away. No matter how much you diet or exercise, those few pounds have remained and stare right at you every single time you look in the mirror. Maybe you’ve looked into the possibility of liposuction, but doing so for a smaller amount of fat is expensive and often not recommended. A tummy tuck may leave scars, and while effective, can be painful and require extended recover time. So, what should you do? Are you forced to simply accept you’ll always have those few extra pounds hanging around? Not at all. With the help of Coolsculpting, you now have the opportunity to rid your body of fat cells, all without painful surgeries or unsightly scars. So What Is Coolsculpting, Anyways? Coolsculpting is an FDA approved method for ridding your body of fat cells once and for all. This special process freezes the fat cells under your skin. Over time, the cells do not receive the necessary nutrients required and simply die off. The body pushes the dead fat cells out, leaving you with a more sculpted body. All of this is […]

You’ve probably heard the term, but what is sclerotherapy, exactly? Simply put, it’s a medical treatment that’s used to permanently remove spider and varicose veins. It’s a relatively straightforward procedure – a saline solution is injected directly into the vein. This irritates the blood vessel lining to make it swell together and clot the blood. Eventually, the vessel becomes scar tissue and fades away.

Many clients worry about looking “top-heavy” with breast augmentation. They want to know what size works best for them, without looking fake. Are there reliable and accurate tips for a choosing breast augmentation size? The way to choose breast augmentation size is selecting those that look they way you always imaged yourself. It may sound overly simplistic, but it all does come down to self-image. Your decision will have long-term consequences. You want to avoid picking a size and style you will regret, and may result in a re-operation. Every woman sees herself differently. What is too large for one person is too small for another. The first time you try gel implant sizers, you will get a good idea what you will actually look like. Your surgeon will guild you through the process, and technology allows us to create an understanding and helps shape your look. Many women want to look natural and don’t want it to appear like they had breast augmentation surgery. Accurate measurements will create reasonable limits. During the sizing process, your feedback will assist the surgeon. The decision is yours, but the surgeon makes recommendations based on your input. There are times a patient states a size is perfect. However, our experience will have us ask […]

Silicone breast implants were pulled off the market in the early 1990s because of fears they caused autoimmune disease, increased the risk of cancer and contributed to all sorts of health issues. However, after years, scientific studies found no link between silicone implants and an increased risk of any systemic disease or long-term health problems. If you are thinking about breast augmentation, you can safely choose between silicone and saline breast implants. With that said, women seek breast augmentation to make their breasts larger and/or fuller. At times this is a reconstruction, like after a mastectomy, but often it is for cosmetic reasons. Regardless, if you are seeking breast augmentation, there are multiple decisions. Many start thinking about size, but even more important is choosing between silicone and saline breast implants. All breast implants have a silicone outer shell. However, they differ in the material filling the implant. Saline is sterile salt water and silicone is a thick, sticky silicone gel that more closely imitates human fat. This means that silicone breast implants more closely look and feel like natural breasts. Nonetheless, both have similar risks such as capsular contracture, infections, and implant leakage. Still, there are some additional differences. Saline implants are often inserted empty, and then filled, while silicone implants are pre-filled. This means a […]

I’m a mother of three. At 36, after birthing those children one after the other, my baby belly refused to go away. People often asked if I was pregnant again even though I wasn’t. I knew something had to change when my sister’s son asked if I had a baby in my tummy like his mother did at the time. I soon became uncomfortable in my own skin. It reached a point where it affected how I related to people, even my husband and my kids. One of my friends suggested plastic surgery, but the idea made me nervous. I spent a lot of time researching tummy tucks – what to expect and how they were done. I lost count of the number of blogs I read, how many videos I watched, and how many photos I looked at. When I finally decided to look up surgeons in the area, I found Dr. James Apesos’ website. It caught my attention that he was board-certified with many years of experience, and I liked that he shared before and after examples of his work. So I scheduled a consultation with him to discuss my questions and concerns. Dr. Apesos took the time […]

As we have blogged about in the past, sclerotherapy is a long-established and effective treatment for the removal of spider veins and varicose veins. Medical professionals have been using this procedure, which has gone largely unchanged, since the 1930s. Moreover, sclerotherapy has a proven success rate. If you are considering the removal of spider veins and varicose veins, we would like to share the main benefits of sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is a cosmetic procedure. While the procedure can improve symptoms like aches, burning and swelling, for most people spider veins and varicose veins are a cosmetic issue. Varicose veins often appear dark purple or blue and are bulging and twisted. For both women and men, the problem can become unattractive and embarrassing. The biggest benefit to patients is sclerotherapy is an effective non-surgical procedure. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Studies of sclerotherapy as a treatment for varicose and spider veins indicate that it has an overall success rate of about 60 to 80 percent in eliminating treated veins.” After treatment, small spider veins and varicose veins begin to disappear in 3 to 6 weeks. Larger veins may take several months. Nonetheless, veins treated with sclerotherapy don’t return once gone. Moreover, less than 10 percent of people will not respond to the therapy. Therefore, while new […]

Are you considering breast augmentation surgery? There are many decisions ahead. At the forefront of most people’s minds is choosing the perfect size, and the choice between saline and silicone. However, before you get ahead of yourself, choosing an experienced plastic surgeon is arguably the most important factor for a successful breast augmentation surgery. So, how do you choose? Deciding on which plastic surgeon to perform a breast augmentation is serious. There are some doctors that you will immediately feel a connection. Their charm and confidence manifest instant trust. This can be a good thing, but first take a pause. There are doctors who are more salesperson than an experienced surgeon. Almost every cosmetic surgery horror storing was because the doctor had a greater ability to sell themselves than perform the procedure. With this in mind, we are providing some advice for picking an experienced plastic surgeon. Board Certification – Ask if the surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Some people wrongly assume any doctor performing a breast augmentation is certified to for the procedure. In reality, any surgeon can legally do a breast augmentation. Board certification ensures your doctor has completed specialized training in plastic surgery. History – Would you choose a doctor if you knew […]

Did you know, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic procedure? Nonetheless, the surgery is not insignificant. Many patients have questions about caring for their breast implants. As with anything, proper care increases longevity. Immediately after surgery, you can expect some tenderness and discomfort. Additionally, there is bruising and swelling. It will slowly subside, but can last a month or more. Depending on the patient, you may receive a prescription for pain or nausea. Nonetheless, if you notice any signs of infection, such as a fever, report this immediately to your doctor. Immediately after surgery, you must wear a postoperative bra until healed. However, after it is also important to wear a bra that provides excellent support. Breast implants add weight, and this weight can affect breast shape. Moreover, a sports bar is essential for physical or strenuous activity such as jogging, biking, or other exercises. Additionally, daily massage of your breasts should become part of your routine. The purpose is to help move implants into position, but also aids in keeping them soft and may reduce scarring. Nonetheless, if you have surface implants, or had a breast lift with augmentation, massaging is not recommended. Some surgeons will recommend a massaging routine for […]

Aging is a natural process and a fact of life, but bad habits early in life can cause an acceleration that makes men and women look older than their years. Regret is a common reaction, but all the hindsight in the world won’t reverse the damage. Everybody knows about the most common plastic surgery techniques as well as less invasive procedures that can help, but what about skin tightening and firming products — can they really make a difference? For most of the products in the general marketplace, the answer is no. Some offer modest help, but few deliver the benefits they promise. That’s not to say that there aren’t some good products out there, but they tend to be few and far between. Your dermatologist or plastic surgeon are good sources for products that are likely to deliver real results. That’s because they have a thorough understanding of the problems presented by aging skin, and know what ingredients and formulations are most likely to correct or at least dramatically improve them. In general, a top priority is UV protection, since sun damage is one of the major causes of lines, wrinkles, and discoloration. Good UV protection will prevent further […]

Are the veins in your hands too prominent or visible? Dark or overly puffy veins can make otherwise toned, attractive hands look aged. Luckily, you can get rid of your prominent veins and restore a more youthful look with sclerotherapy, a popular vein removal method. What is sclerotherapy? During sclerotherapy, your dermatologist injects a special chemical into the unwanted veins. The chemical causes the vein to close, and over the coming weeks, your body absorbs the dead vein tissue. Before long, those veins you once hated will no longer be visible. The procedure usually only takes about 20 minutes. Does sclerotherapy hurt? The pain and discomfort are quite mild. Your doctor may use a local anesthetic or numbing gel to keep you comfortable during the procedure. You might feel a slight pinching when the needle is inserted into your veins and a bit of a burning sensation as the chemical begins working to close your veins. What is the recovery process like? After sclerotherapy, your hands might be slightly swollen and bruised. These side effects should go away within a few days, and they aren’t likely to keep you from partaking in activities you love. Most patients don’t need to […]

Do you have deep creases between your nose and the corners of your lips? Known as nasolabial folds, these creases can age your appearance and distract from an otherwise youthful face. Thankfully, there is a way to erase them without undergoing surgery. Juvederm is an injectable filler that helps many patients erase nasolabial folds and achieve a more youthful appearance. What is Juvederm and how does it work? The main active ingredient in Juvederm is a substance called hyaluronic acid. This is a substance that is naturally found in your skin. It gives your skin firmness and elasticity, but as you age, the amount of hyaluronic acid in your skin tends to decrease. This leads to creases like your nasolabial folds. Injecting Juvederm into these folds increases the concentration of hyaluronic acid in the area, filling in your folds and giving your skin a youthful, plump appearance. What can you expect when you have Juvederm injected? Your doctor will evaluate your health history and your desired results to make sure Juvederm is a safe and effective choice for you. If you’re worried about discomfort, your doctor may apply a numbing cream to keep you comfortable. Then, Juvederm will be injected […]

Botox has long been used to remove wrinkles and fine lines. It has helped thousands of men and women achieve the more youthful, toned look they desire. However, there are a lot of false myths floating around about Botox that may deter patients from seeking this reliable, effective treatment. Here’s a look at the real truth being masked by those Botox myths. Myth: Botox is toxic and unsafe. This myth may stem from the fact that Botox is made from a substance called botulinum toxin, which is the toxin that causes botulism food poisoning. The name sounds scary, but in reality, Botox is very safe when administered by a trained doctor. The botulinum toxin does not spread outside of the injection site, so you will not get botulism from the treatment. Botox was tested extensively before being FDA approved for cosmetic use in 2002, and it was used or non-cosmetic reasons long before that. It has a long history of success and safety. Myth: Botox will make your face look expressionless. Some people fear that Botox will leave them looking plastic and emotionless since it temporarily paralyzes the muscles in the face. While the injected areas may appeal a little overly […]

The prospect of finally getting rid of unwanted fat deposits can be exciting. Yet, some patients approach liposuction with a little apprehension if they’re not quite sure what to expect as they recover. Here are the answers to a few common questions patients have about the days, weeks, and months after their liposuction procedure. How bad is the pain? Most patients rate their discomfort as mild to moderate. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers to alleviate the discomfort if needed. Wearing the compression garments your doctor recommends after surgery will help keep swelling down, and as long as swelling is minimized, you should not be too uncomfortable. You can expect the bruising and tenderness to subside greatly during the first week after the procedure, though you might have a little swelling for another month or so. When can you go back to work? Unless your job requires hard physical labor, you can likely resume work within one to two weeks of your procedure. Your doctor will schedule several checkups and let you know for sure when it’s safe to return. Typically, patients can resume light exercise, like walking, within a few days of surgery. It’s actually good to get out […]

In 2014, 1.26 million men had some type of cosmetic procedure done. Four hundred thousand of those men had Botox injections. The numbers show that this is an increase of 300 percent in the male use of Botox. Why are men suddenly using Botox? One reason men are using Botox all of a sudden is the increase in competition over jobs. Between December 2007 and June 2009, the U.S. was going through a depression and millions of jobs were lost. After the recession in July of 2009, the unemployment rate of men aged 16 and over was 9.8%. In August 2016, the rate in the same age group had been reduced to 4.5%. As the country emerged from this recession, men started using whatever means they deemed necessary to give themselves an advantage in the workplace. According to Dr. Scot Glasberg, President of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, men are “wanting to look a little younger to get a job more easily. First impressions are everything in an interview.” Looking younger gives them more confidence going into an interview situation and means that they may be chosen over someone who appears older. A youthful appearance implies a fresh outlook and a sharp mind. The […]

Weight loss is an ongoing struggle for many Americans. Exercise and diet are not always sufficient to achieve a toned physique – even those who practice fitness regularly and maintain healthy eating habits sometimes experience stubborn areas of fat accumulation. In addition, it is well documented that spot reduction doesn’t work – according to Yale Scientific, fat reduction tends to be generalized after exercise; it doesn’t selectively target the area that has been exercised. The development of coolsculpting has an interesting history. In Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Dieter Manstein and Dr. R. Rox Anderson made note of the “popsicle panniculitis” – a phenomenon of fat loss in the cheeks in children who are frequent ice or popsicle-eaters. They applied the principle toward fat loss in other areas of the body, using the targeted application of cold to lower the tissue temperature to about 40 degrees. This causes the fat cells of interest to die without harming nearby organs or skin. The procedure can generally be expected to reduce the fat cells in the treated area by about 20%. The results are not instant, taking two to four months for the final results to be apparent, but the lack of anesthesia, surgery, or needles, or downtime make it […]

We’ve all heard the term and maybe even snickered about it a little. But it’s not so funny when it’s your arms that have morphed into the flabby, unflattering upper arm condition commonly referred to as “lunch lady” arms. Losing muscle tone as we age is common and natural, but that doesn’t mean you have to accept it as irreversible. The Cure Your plastic surgeon has an answer: A procedure known as an arm lift will get rid of lunch lady arms (along with the self-conscious feeling that often accompanies them). Whether your “lunch lady” arms are the result of age, heredity, losing weight or any other reason, an arm lift can restore tone and shape to the appearance of your arms. The Procedure An arm lift or brachioplasty, is a surgery where the surgeon removes excess fat and skin from your upper arms and tightens the underlying tissue to restore a more toned-looking appearance to your upper arm area. Since an arm lift is a surgical procedure, your surgeon will want to know you’re in generally good health, and may require certain test results before proceeding. The Amazing Results But the results of arm lift surgery are immediately noticeable […]

Micro-needling. The name sounds a little scary — maybe painful too. So what exactly is it and how can it help my skin? Micro-needling is done with a small, hand-held tool called a derma roller, a device covered with numerous closely spaced tiny sterile needles. As the technician rolls it across the skin, the derma roller makes tiny holes in the skin’s top layer. Although it sounds like it could be painful, the light pressure used usually ensures that any discomfort is minor, and a topical anesthetic is often used to minimize it further. The technical name for the procedure is Collagen Induction Therapy or CIT. What Does It Do? Micro-needling creates what are known as “controlled injuries” beneath the surface of the skin. In response, the body produces collagen to repair the damage, resulting in a plumper, smoother surface layer. It minimizes the appearance of fine lines, scars from acne or injuries, and stretch marks. Is It Effective? Studies have shown that CIT is especially effective in treating scars (even fairly deep ones) when combined with 15% trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peel. Its skin-smoothing and firming abilities have also been shown to be effective, especially when combined with Vitamin C. […]

Although forms of this cosmetic procedure have existed since 1995, micro-needling has gained increased popularity over the years due to its variety of beauty-enhancing benefits. While examining your options, no doubt many questions arise over what sets this procedure apart from other cosmetic treatments. Even before you schedule your consultation with your plastic surgeon, consider these frequently asked questions. What is Micro-Needling? Using very small needles, this procedure produces small, limited injuries that stimulate an increased production of collagen, a structural protein that creates firm, plump skin. The mild, minimally invasive injuries created by this treatment are therapeutic and produce powerful skin benefits. What Benefits does this Procedure Have? This treatment has the potential for remedying or reducing many skin conditions such as scars, wrinkles, stretch marks, and hyperpigmentation. Because its effects are so varied, micro-needling is a wonderful alternative for patients with a wide variety of undesirable skin defects. Rather than enduring a host of procedures or treatments, many patients have found the answer to various skin conditions with micro-needling. Is This Procedure Unpleasant? This procedure in minimally invasive and most patients do not report many negative side-effects. However, some residual tenderness and redness is expected following the treatment. By following […]

Breast augmentation, while normally used to enhance the size of the breasts, can also be used to improve breast shape and symmetry. Like any surgical procedure, breast augmentation does require a certain amount of recovery time. The following tips will help you remain as comfortable as possible while you recuperate. Immediately After the Surgery: It is normal to experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort for the first couple of weeks following breast augmentation. Dr. Apesos will prescribe pain medication to help alleviate the discomfort. We recommend that you create a comfortable spot with plenty of pillows where you can relax. It also helps to have ice packs available to reduce swelling and discomfort. You should avoid sleeping on your stomach for at least two weeks following the procedure. For your safety, you should also arrange for someone to be with you for the first 24 hours following your surgery. Returning to Work: Most patients are able to return to work about a week following surgery; however, you may want to schedule a little extra time off to allow yourself more time to heal. You should avoid strenuous activity or exercise and heavy lifting for about a month following your surgery. The Results: […]

Take a moment to think about today’s fashions: form-fitting dresses, jeans, t-shirts. These garments make it almost impossible to camouflage bulges. Moreover, no matter how much you work at maintaining a healthy weight, many find that lumpy fat deposits never completely going away. It is no wonder that so many people are looking to CoolSculpting and liposuction for a solution. But which one is best? The quick answer is both are an effective solution, if you are a qualified candidate. Regardless, depending on your situation and needs, one choice is better than another. CoolSculpting and liposuction do both eliminate unwanted fat cells from your body. However, there are some significant differences in the procedures. Understanding the difference between CoolSculpting and liposuction will help you make a better choice. The most significant distinction is surgical versus non-surgical. CoolSculpting is a non-surgical treatment. It uses a scientifically proven cooling process to kill and dissolve fat cells, without negatively impacting your other tissues. In comparison, liposuction is a surgical process, where an incision is made and then the fat cells (and other tissue) is extracted from the body. Furthermore, CoolSculpting’s controlled cooling targets only fat cells. While liposuction will affect fat cells, but may impact other adjacent tissue. Moreover, CoolSculpting is not as […]

One of the most frequently asked questions about CoolSculpting is, “How long before I see results with CoolSculpting?” Many people are familiar with the fast results of other cosmetic fat loss procedures, like liposuction. While the nonsurgical procedure itself in generally short, roughly an hour in many instances, it may take a few weeks to start seeing results. However, it will take 3-4 months for full effect, and likely multiple sessions to reach your goal. A single CoolSculpting procedure will take approximately an hour for each treated area, working each area that is roughly hand size. Accordingly, each of your “love-handles” is a separate area, and your lower abdomen is often segmented into two areas. Therefore, you can schedule more than one treatment area within a single office visit. If you want to treat two areas, you will need a little more than two hours. CoolSculpting eliminates around 25 percent of the fat cells per procedure. So, many will also benefit from multiple sessions. The fat cells that the CoolSculpting procedure targets are frozen, destroyed, and then later absorbed by the body. As a result, those fat cells are gone forever. Regardless, since it will take about 3-4 months for full results, you can schedule […]

Although it is one of the most common cosmetic procedures, there is still a great deal of misinformation and misunderstanding regarding breast augmentation. The following seeks to separate fact from fiction regarding some of the most common breast augmentation myths. Myth 1: It is easy to tell when someone has implants. The goal of any plastic surgery procedure, including breast augmentation, is to create a natural looking result. Dr. Apesos will work with you to choose an implant that will give you the fullness and shape that you desire while still appearing natural and in proper proportion with your frame. Myth 2: A particular implant will produce the same result in each patient. Every woman is different, and a number of factors will determine the final results of your breast augmentation, including the placement of the implant, the condition of your skin, and your size. While it is helpful for you to provide pictures of the type of look that you are trying to achieve, it is also important to look at the range of results possible on individuals with a build and configuration similar to yours to get an idea of the type of result that you might expect. Myth […]

One of the most important things to have, when considering liposuction, are realistic expectations. Patients are often prepared that, after the procedure, there will be some pain, swelling, and bruising. However, the whole reason for having liposuction is the cosmetic effect. While the majority of patients report satisfaction with the outcome, it is possible that the things will not turn out the way you wanted or expected. This is why Dr. James Apesos takes the time to counsel his patients about the importance of reasonable expectations. Granted, it is sometimes challenging to have reasonable expectations with some of the advertisements you have seen or after looking at pictures of those before and after liposuction. Regardless, one must understand that advertising is created with the intent of persuading you to purchase a product or service. Advertisements rarely provide useful and informative information. That is the prime reason Dr. Apesos keeps and maintains this blog, believing an informed client makes the best patient. Wouldn’t you agree? In most instances, the results from liposuction are long-lasting if you maintain a healthy weight. Although, if you gain weight, this can change your fat distribution. So, while your new body shape is generally permanent, your figure can grow to a larger version. Nevertheless, […]

One important aspect of being happy with CoolSculpting results is having reasonable expectations, which is true for all aesthetic procedures. Therefore, it is important to understand who is a good candidate. CoolSculpting is a cosmetic treatment that will destroy fat cells. In very simple terms, the procedure makes use of controlled cooling for a non-invasive reduction of stubborn fat deposits, effectively reshaping body contours. It works because of the cold causing cell death of the fat tissue, but it does not create injury to the skin or muscle. For many, CoolSculpting is a safe and effective non-surgical alternative to liposuction. In determining if you are a good candidate for CoolSculpting, there is some good news and bad news. At first glance, the good news is that if you are without any serious health issues or pregnant, then you are likely able to receive treatment. The bad news is that further evaluating yourself will make you acutely aware of your physical condition and the fatty spots on your body. However, if you are already aware of your pudgy chunks, then there is nothing to lose. Firstly, you are not a good candidate if you have a BMI of 34 or more. Essentially, those who are “severely obese” will need to start a weight loss […]

For many, the promise of CoolSculpting is just too good to be true. How many times have you seen a weight loss advertisement that claims to melt fat away? It never fails. At the end of those commercials is always a disclaimer stating results require diet and exercise. So, is it the miracle weight loss supplement producing the results or the diet and exercise program? Therefore, it is not uncommon for a person to ask, “Does CoolSculpting require a strict diet and exercise program?” The answer is no. CoolSculpting is a procedure that can quite legitimately be described as causing the fat to melt away. When you use weight loss supplements, low-calorie diets, and intense workouts, you are burning calories. By burning more calories than you consume, you are forcing the body to release the energy stored in fat cells. Over time, and with continual effort, those fat cells become smaller, but they do not go away. On the other hand, CoolSculpting causes actual “cell death” of fat in the treated area. The cells are then absorbed into the system, and passes from the body as waste. Once cell death occurs, the fat cells are gone forever. That said, diet, exercise, and an overall healthy lifestyle will optimize CoolSculpting results. […]

One of the biggest concerns people have, when it comes to weight loss, is the possibility of loose skin. As you age, you will begin to lose skin elasticity. So, if you have lost a large amount of weight, especially in a short period of time, there is a possibility of loose skin. That said, CoolSculpting does not specifically contribute to this problem. The typical CoolSculpting client is within 20 pounds of their ideal weight. If you were excessively overweight, and loose skin was going to be an issue, it would be an issue and can be included in your consultation. Many people who lose weight have a dream of a tight, toned body. It is frustrating when you have put in all that work, only to have extra skin that does not reflect your hard work. Moreover, loose skin is not only an issue of aesthetics. There are health risks as well, like rashes, infections, and back pain. In many cases, it can take two years to conform to your new body. But, if you were obese, with a BMI over 30, for a long period of time, your skin may never shrink and you will need another option. […]

Recently, we had a person reach out to our office who had a CoolSculpting procedure at another office. They were worried because of abdominal swelling and pain, describing the feeling of having done a million crunches. The person was really upset. She was young and fit, but had a small tummy bulge. She does have a good diet and exercise routine, and now worries that CoolSculpting was a mistake. Her ultimate question was, “Is abdominal swelling and pain normal after CoolSculpting?” Ultimately, this is an issue of a patient not being properly educated before the procedure. It is not uncommon for a person to experience some pain and swelling after a CoolSculpting procedure. This is usually short-lived but can last up to 2 weeks. Other issues that you can experience is an itching, numbness, muscle spasms, cramping, and even diarrhea. Nonetheless, this is all something that should also be explained in the post-care instructions. Here are some quick things to keep in mind. 1. Pain Killers – Extra Strength Tylenol is enough to relieve pain. However, avoid aspirin. Also, a compression garment may help reduce discomfort. 2. Activities – Any discomfort is similar to doing a lot of sit-ups or […]

Skin tightening and firming products are one of the largest aspects of the skin care and cosmetic industry. With so many options on the market, it’s challenging knowing what to look for. What works well for one person may not be the best option for another. Before settling on a new skin product, keep these 3 basic questions in mind. 1.) What type of skin do I have Everyone’s skin is very different. While some individuals have extremely dry and course skin, others may have very oily and rich skin texture. Most people are a combination of these extremes with varying textures throughout their body. Before deciding on a new skin product, always keep your specific skin type in mind. Product success may vary widely based on your skin textures. If you’re unsure about your skin type, consider visiting a skin specialist for answers. 2.) How much success have others had with this product Always check into product reviews and consumer reports when looking for a new skin care product. Finding out how well it worked for someone else is key in deciding whether a product is a good match for yourself. Look for impartial reviews and recommendations. If you […]

New clients walk into our office every day with one question: Is CoolSculpting better than liposuction? Fundamentally, this is the wrong question to ask. The better inquiry is which treatments are you a better candidate and achieves your goal. While both will permanently remove fat cells from the body, the similarities end there. All things considered, your needs and goals will dictate which body sculpting procedure is right for you. You should beware those selling one-size-fits-all solutions. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Here is a general list. Procedure Type – Liposuction is a surgical procedure that requires anesthesia, while CoolSculpting is noninvasive. Best for Treating – CoolSculpting works best for small to moderate trouble spots. On the other hand, liposuction works well on larger deposits and fine-tuning surgical results. Target Areas – Liposuction works great for the abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks, thighs and most areas. CoolSculpting works well for the upper and lower abdomen, back, and inner thighs. Results – A single CoolSculpting treatment can reduce the size of a bulge, while liposuction will produce more dramatic and immediate results. Downtime – Many times, with liposuction, it will take a week before you can return to regular active and another 6 weeks for vigorous exercise. CoolSculpting has no downtime at all. Repeated Treatments – In most instances, CoolSculpting achieves […]

The internet has become a valuable resource for gaining information. However, it has also become a place where rumors can start and quickly spread. Recently, a number of patients have come into the office asking, “Can CoolSculpting cause hernias?” The fast answer is no. CoolSculpting cannot cause or increase the risk of developing a hernia. Hernias form when an organ pushes through the muscle wall which holds it in place. They are most common in the abdomen. However, they can also occur in the groin area, the belly button, and even the thigh. Additionally, hernias happen when the combination of weak muscles and strain cause a tear. The muscle weakness can come from old age, an injury, chronic coughing, or a congenital defect. Examples of a strain include coughing, sneezing, sudden weight gain, constipation, heavy weight lifting, and others. There is no risk of developing a hernia after CoolSculpting. The procedure only affects fat cells, and it does not impact the muscle. So, there is no risk of either weakening the muscles or causing strain. However, it is possible for CoolSculpting to uncover a hernia that was not apparent beforehand. CoolSculpting is an extremely safe, noninvasive, cosmetic procedure. The most common side effects include some mild discomfort, bruising, numbness, tingling, […]

The skin industry offers no shortage of miracle products promising a firmer, younger-looking you. For women in particular, skin tightening and firming products offer a certain allure with their promises to eliminate cellulite, get rid of wrinkles around the eyes or mouth, cure sagging skin, and reduce the signs of aging. As we age, our bodies produce less elastin and collagen, proteins that help keep our skin firm. In addition, fat deposits store in pockets beneath our skin, leading to the cellulite, particularly in women. Wrinkles, cellulite, and sagging skin cause embarrassment for many. If you could find a product that reduced or eliminated these unwanted effects of aging, it only makes sense that you would want to use it. But do these skin tightening and firming products really produce the results they promise? Sadly, many products on the market today simply do not work. They do not include the ingredients necessary to produce even a temporary result to firm your sagging skin. Other products, however, can produce a noticeable, although temporary, improvement in your skin’s firmness and elasticity. These products include ingredients such as caffeine or retinol. Caffeine can help the skin appear smoother and firmer, but its effects will not last. […]

Are you worried that CoolSculpting has a risk of permanent nerve damage? During a patient’s initial consultation, they are informed about some side effects, which can include short-term pain, swelling, bruising, and maybe a pins and needles sensation. Despite this information, some are unprepared. Moreover, some people have a more extreme response than others. This can manifest concerns in some who worry about the pain and the inflammation. There are examples on online forums of people asking for help. Therefore, today’s article answers the question, “Does CoolSculpting cause nerve damage?” Some patients will suffer short-term discomfort, pain, or numbness. While different individuals will have different tolerance levels to these side-effects, CoolSculpting has been cleared by the FDA and is considered safe and effective. Moreover, there are no known instances of CoolSculpting causing permanent nerve damage. In fact, while some side-effects can last several weeks, none are known to be permanent. Regardless, there are some people who are not ideal candidates for CoolSculpting. It is important to disclose any health conditions prior to the procedure. This would include health problems such as any known sensitivity to cold, impaired circulation, post-herpetic neuralgia or diabetic neuropathy, impaired skin sensitivity, or bleeding disorders. Ultimately, […]

There are many people who ask, “Can CoolSculpting be used on the face and neck?” You may be familiar with the story of children developing dimples because of frozen popsicles. Regardless, the science of safely removing fat using cold technology is sound for any party of the body. The only challenge is the creation of an applicator specifically designed for the face, cheeks, and neck. Currently, there is work to develop applicator devices and techniques for other areas of the body. However, at the moment, an applicator for the face and neck does not exist. It is simply an issue of waiting for the technology to catch up with the science. As new CoolSculpting’s tools are added, doctors will be able to treat the neck, chin, face, and cheeks. That said, Dr. Apesos has more than thirty years experience performing cosmetic procedures, liposuction, and the contouring of the chin and neck. He has the ability to tighten the jawline and neck, and he can provide you with the streamlined look you want. Additionally, Dr. Apesos offers midface lifts, cheek implants, chin implants, and other facial procedures. Ultimately, while the CoolSculpting is not available at this time, it is coming soon. […]

How often have you heard about the latest and greatest thing, only to learn later that it does not actually measure up to all the hype? Some product will promise magical weight loss, with no effort. But, how do you know for sure that it really does work? How can you trust that CoolSculpting is not just an old-fashioned snake oil sales pitch? The answer to whether or not CoolSculpting is really worth it comes from those who received the treatment. Over a 24 month period, RealSelf.com surveyed 1,121 CoolSculpting patients. The overall satisfaction with the body-shaping procedure resulted in a “Worth It Rating” of 82 percent. RealSelf.com collects information on hundreds of cosmetic treatments, and reports patient feedback in their exclusive “Worth It Rating”. It is one of the easiest and most straightforward ways to discover authentic opinions about any cosmetic procedure. CoolSculpting has a very high review rating from those who have actually had the procedure completed. However, the reason it works is based on sound science. Researchers at Harvard Medical School found when fat cells are cooled, under specific conditions, they will actually die. The body will then naturally remove the fat as waste from the body. […]

Recently, a client mentioned reading a study about liposuction. The researchers concluded that fat is “redistributed” to other areas of the body after treatment. Her question was if CoolSculpting had the same risk. Could fat return, but simply be redistributed to another part of the body? So, today’s article addresses the question, “With CoolScupting, is there a risk of fat returning to the body, only in a different place?” Here is one thing that needs to be made very clear, fat cells cannot return, either with CoolSculpting or liposuction. When it comes to CoolSculpting, the fat experience cell death and are absorbed into the body, then expelled as waste. Additionally, during a liposuction procedure, the fat cells are physically removed. Once those fat cells are gone, they are gone forever, never to return. It is impossible for those fat cells to become “redistributed” to other parts of the body. Nevertheless, a person is still able to gain weight. If, after a CoolSculpting or liposuction procedure, a patient does not maintain their weight with a healthy diet and lifestyle, the fat cells in other parts of the body can and will grow larger. The result is that a person will gain weight. Moreover, because of having had CoolSculpting or liposuction […]

Today’s article was inspired by an email received from a prospective patient. The young woman was speculating about a possible risk of “cell mutation” and cancer as a potential side effect of the CoolScupting procedure. What we can tell you with absolute certainty is that there has been no link made between CoolScupting and cancer. CoolScupting is a nonintrusive aesthetic procedure that targets only fat cells and leaves skin and muscle tissue unaffected. There is simply no connection between CoolScupting and cancer. During the procedure, a special tool is used to cool the targeted area of your body, reducing it to a freezing temperature. This freezes and kills only fat cells in that specific area of your body. Within a short period of time after the treatment, these lifeless fat cells will naturally break down and will be flushed out of your body as waste. Moreover, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved CoolSculpting as a safe. This is not to say there are no side effects. However, they all tend to be mild and short-lived. A patient can experience aching, pain, or stinging at the treatment site, which can last up to two weeks. The cold temperatures can also cause swelling, bruising, redness, and skin […]

While breast augmentation has been around for a long time, they continue to grow in popularity. In fact, the aesthetic procedure has grown in popularity even in the last decade. Regardless, despite its popularity and prevalence, there are many misconceptions and myths that still exist. These myths are often because of sensationalized journalism, a rare or unusual occurrence, or outdated information which is no longer relevant. So, today’s article tackles and tries to dispel some of the most common breast augmentation myths. Common Myths About Breast Augmentation 1. Breast Augmentation Can Cause Cancer – This is simply untrue. The myth began in the 1980s, when a citizen’s group out of Washington, D.C. warned of signals that silicone breast implants could cause cancer. However, there has never been a scientific link between an increased risk of breast cancer and implants. 2. After a Certain Age, a Woman Should Not Get Implants – The fact of the matter is women of any age can be a good candidate for breast augmentation. An experienced plastic surgeon can review all your options. Regardless, age is not a prime factor, and women over 40 can and do have breast implants. 3. Breast Implants Need Replaced Every 7 to 10 Years – If and […]

We couldn’t be happier to be here today to tell you about how some patients of ours have tried every skin tightening cream, lotion, and wrap on the market. We know a patient whom went from 252lbs to 100lbs due to gastroparesis. In one years time she had lost a large amount of weight, and she acquired a large amount of sagging skin. She struggled for years using creams that had negative side effects, like burning, itching, or even worse; the ones that make you bounce right back when you stop using them. Caffeine is an active ingredient to most skin tightening and firming products, which can be extremely dangerous to your health. These creams are especially dangerous to those who cover a large portion of skin, or who have other medical issues. The patient began exercising and it just wasn’t doing anything for the skin sagging issues, so she decided to try one of those fancy wraps that everyone keeps posting online about. That was when she realized there was something scary happening. It turned out that she was already dehydrated before she began to use the wrap, so when she put the wrap on – it further dehydrated her. This caused her to faint, and realize she had […]

Are you searching for the best option to eliminate varicose veins and spider veins? Sclerotherapy is a generally simple medical procedure that can eradicate varicose veins and spider veins. By injecting a solution directly into your veins, the veins will then collapse and eventually fade away. Moreover, since the 1930s, sclerotherapy has proven itself as a safe and effective treatment. Nevertheless, many patients have questions. Today’s article proves answers to the most common. 1. How long are sclerotherapy sessions? – The initial treatment session can take several hours, but is usually less. The physician will want to observe how you react to the injections. Nevertheless, most people have multiple varicose veins and spider veins that will require several sessions. During each session, there is a limit of 10-20 injections. So, many patients will need 2 or 3 sessions over several weeks. 2. What occurs following a sclerotherapy session? – After a sclerotherapy treatment, the area is wrapped and bandaged. It is also important to keep your leg elevated for several hours. Also, to help control swelling and bruising, it is recommended that you wear a compression stocking. The reality is that your legs will look worse before they start to look better. Final results take about a month. 3. Will […]

Are you asking yourself if plastic surgery is right for you? What actually causes people to feel the need for aesthetic, cosmetic surgery? Many people think about what it would be like to change something they don’t like about their appearance. While some people are satisfied with their looks, a growing number are taking control of their appearance, choosing plastic surgery to correct imperfections and improve their self-esteem and confidence. Whatever the reason, more people than ever are reporting that they are unhappy with the way they look. This is a trend for both women and men. Moreover, studies have shown that happiness is often linked to a person’s self-perception of physical attractiveness. Therefore, it should not be surprising that most patients are pleased with the results of their surgery and report feeling better about themselves. That said, patient satisfaction is closely linked to expectations. While plastic surgery can help improve feelings of self-esteem, self-worth, and confidence, those people who expect a complete and total transformation can become disappointed. Therefore, it is important to consult a qualified plastic surgeon about various procedures and options. A skilled and experienced surgeon will design procedures based on a patient’s needs. Very often, a combination of surgical and non-surgical procedures will produce the best […]

Your Health You may be asked to have a medical exam or lab work. Your doctor will ask about your family history and your medical history. You will be signing a release that states you are aware of the risks, benefits and any alternatives associated with your procedure. Your Weight You should be at a stable weight. Liposuction is a powerful way for people to lose weight and keep it off. However, they need to pair this procedure with a careful diet and exercise routine. That said, exercise cannot be started too soon or you run the risk of complicating your surgery. Some Exercise Is Possible While you won’t be able to start lifting or doing any serious workouts after liposuction, it is possible to do light physical activity a day or two after the procedure. For example, you can take a few short walks around your neighborhood or do chores in the house. In fact, this type of exercise is typically suggested as a way of avoiding blood clots in the operation area. Heavy Duty Exercise Will Have To Wait If you’re excited about getting into exercise after liposuction, you need to wait at least a week or two before starting light aerobic or lifting exercises. Your surgery is still too fresh and you may injure yourself if you start too soon. Even when you start a week or two later, you should go at about half-speed until you feel comfortable with heavy exercise. Symptoms You’ve Worked Out Too Hard Make sure that you watch yourself […]

A circle of debate continues around coffee table conversations when it comes to which type of breast implant is better: Saline or silicone. While there is no right or wrong answer, there might be a right or wrong option for you. Breast augmentation should be a procedure specifically tailored to each unique body structure, and that includes the material used to augment each type. A one-on-one consultation with a board-certified surgeon will help determine which is right for you. And in the meantime, we have outlined some of the pros and cons to help answer some questions you might have about silicone and saline implants. Silicone Silicone implants have made leaps and bounds since their inception in the 1960’s. In the past, it was not uncommon for a gel-filled silicone implant to rupture and spill into the body. This was because of the thin outer shell used in second generation implants. Today, cosmetic surgeons use third-generation prefilled silicone implants, typically referred to as cohesive gel implants. Patients who benefit the most from these types of implants typically have a smaller frame with little to moderate natural breast tissue, to begin with. This is primarily because of the rippling effect that […]

Veins are a crucial part of our body. They are responsible for carrying blood throughout every inch of our tissue. However, while most of the time, our veins don’t bother us one bit, there are certain conditions where our veins that should be hidden on the inside begin to affect our outside appearance. However, you don’t just have to live with unsightly veins marring your skin, if you want to change painful or visually displeasing veins, a good plastic surgeon can help through a procedure known as sclerotherapy. How The Sclerotherapy Process Works? Varicose veins, spider veins, and even just overly large bulging veins can all look pretty terrible on what otherwise should be our smooth, pristine skin. However, through sclerotherapy, they can be completely treated making it so they disappear completely. In this procedure, the veins are injected with a chemical foam that closes them up. That vein tissue is then reabsorbed by the body and those unsightly veins are gone forever. Not only will soreness of varicose veins be gone and the discoloration of spider veins, but you won’t even have the pale blue shadow of a vein snaking under your skin once the re-absorption process is completed. […]

When scheduling your liposuction appointment with a plastic surgeon, often we are a little nervous. Thus we ask what we should do to prep for the procedure. It always feels better to know that you have prepared before your liposuction as best you can, right? However, what we should be asking is what we shouldn’t do before liposuction. Most plastic surgeons will go over crucial things to do as well as what not to do before your liposuction. There are also a few smaller issues that you should know to avoid as well. While you should avoid everything your plastic surgeon tells you to, the general rule of thumb is that if you aren’t sure you should do it, you probably shouldn’t. The key to any plastic surgery procedure is to spend the night before the procedure just relaxing and not stressing out. Shaving Before Your Liposuction You can still shave your legs and underarms before your liposuction procedure if you so choose. However, if you think your incision site is a little too hairy and want to trim it up – don’t. This can occasionally cause ingrown hairs or impart bacteria from your razor that can invite infection to […]

If you have unsightly bulging veins, spider veins, or painful varicose veins, then pursuing sclerotherapy results through a plastic surgeon is the right choice to help improve your life and your look. In this simple procedure, your plastic surgeon injects a chemical into the veins which will cause the veins to harmlessly close. The body then reabsorbs the vein tissue and you are left with no more visible veins the in area, not even the faint blue shadow of normal vein tissue where the problem veins used to be. This is often done quickly and safely by a plastic surgeon to get your skin marred by unsightly veins back to its beautiful original form without affecting blood flow in the area. However, everyone who has had plastic surgery or at least looked into it before knows that not all results are permanent, some results can last for years while others only a few months before another treatment is needed. In most procedures, the results often wear off eventually because the body is constantly changing. So the question stands: If you have sclerotherapy, how long do you have before those veins come back? Will Sclerotherapy Treated Veins Come Back? There is […]

Many men and women have stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to even the strictest diet and exercise regimen. They’re often in areas such as the jowls, saddlebags, lower stomach, upper arms, and thighs. According to CNN, liposuction remains one of the top 5 most requested procedures, offering an immediate reduction of trouble spots by removing excess fat. Though every surgery involves risk, and the recovery can be complicated or painful, many patients are thrilled with the long term results. Here is some helpful information about liposuction aftercare. About the Procedure During the procedure, typically done under local or general anesthesia, a plastic surgeon will insert a suction tube under the skin into the pockets of fat that will be removed. The surgeon suctions away the fat using a syringe or vacuum pump. It’s important to seek out a qualified, experienced surgeon, for the results will be dependent on his or her skill. Excess fat removal can leave a wrinkled or lumpy look. Failing to remove enough fat will not produce the optimal contour. There are several methods of liposuction that might be used: tumescent liposuction, where a mixture of lidocaine, epinephrine, and IV fluids are injected to help flush […]

Even though I’ve never been overweight, I have always struggled with a soft jawline. Several members of my family have double chins, so I know there is a genetic component; and my jaw is small to begin with. Over time, I developed the habit of reflexively sticking my tongue to the roof of my mouth every time a camera was pointed at me to avoid the unflattering bulge, and I even tried to do neck and chin exercises intended to make the chin area more taught. I practiced posture and poses, minimized sugar in my diet, and began to work out regularly, but the issue got even worse after the birth of my daughter. I gained 25 pounds during pregnancy, and lost them over the course of a year; but no amount of diet and exercises seemed to affect my double chin. The Resolution Finally I decided to schedule a plastic surgery consultation. The surgeon took pictures of me from the front and profile view, and recommended that I get chin liposuction. He also suggested that I get a small implant designed to smooth out my prejowl sulcus. These are grooves along the sides of the jaw that can exaggerate […]

There is a certain misconception that breast augmentation is only a popular choice for trophy wives or models. While both certainly might look into it for a bigger bust and more confidence, in truth plastic surgeons more often see another sort of clientele when it comes to breast augmentation: mothers. Due to the aging stigma that used to be prevalent about plastic surgery — how it makes you somehow unpleasantly superficial to have your body look good — mothers who undergo breast augmentation don’t like to talk about it, but it is often needed after they have children. The process of growing a child and nursing it really does a number on a mother’s breasts. Many mothers undergo what is referred to as breast ptosis after pregnancy, a term used by the medical community to refer to breast sagging. The more children you have and nurse, the worse that sagging is going to get. No amount of postpartum exercise or diet is going to reverse the process of sagging; it can make women feel incredibly uncomfortable in their own skin. Some mothers may accept it as just a reality they have to live with. But that’s not actually true since… […]

If you have made the decision to have a breast augmentation surgery done, whether it was to enlarge or reduce their size, you’re probably excited to see what your new bust will be like. For those who choose enlargement, they are excited see how they look in the tight black dress. For women that choose reduction, they simply might be excited by the prospect of not having daily back pain. However, no matter which procedure you choose to have done, one thing remains the same. After the procedure is done, the patient is excited to start bra shopping for their new bust. While new and expensive bras to match your new chest are one of the best parts of augmentation, shopping for them should wait. Prediction Isn’t Perfect The issue with breast reduction surgery is that your plastic surgeon can get you the size you want, but it may not always be the size you expect. Breast reduction is typically easier to size while breast enlargement can be a little trickier to size. The enlargements are measured in CC’s of saline or silicone rather than just cup size. This can mean 400 CC’s of saline can be a C cup […]

Liposuction, often referred to as “lipo”, is a surgical procedure performed by a licensed physician to slim, sculpt and reshape specific areas of the body by removing excess fat. Dr. Apesos will perform an evaluation to help you determine how liposuction will help you meet your goals for your body. Once the procedure is completed, here’s what to expect within the days, weeks and months during the healing process. What to Expect Immediately After the Procedure Within the first 24 hours, you can expect to feel very little pain and discomfort; you will still experience numbness from the procedure. The process of liposuction involves the injection of fluids into the body and those fluids will need to drain after the procedure. The longer that the fluid is retained by the body, the longer the body will remain swollen so expelling that fluid quickly will aid in a quicker recovery. As the fluid drains, you will need to ensure that you’re resting on towels to keep bed sheets clean. The fluid may be tinted red from blood so don’t be alarmed if you see that it isn’t clear. As the numbness wears off, some pain or discomfort may be felt. Dr. […]

New beauty products seem to be hitting the market every day. With the global cosmetic market growing at a rate of four percent annually, it is no surprise that the beauty products market is projected to reach over $805 billion USD by 2023. With so many products available to consumers, it is important to separate those products that are proven to be effective from those that promise unsubstantiated results. Below are five tips to help you find beauty products that actually work. 1) Look for beauty products which are approved by the FDA FDA approval is not required for all types of beauty products. But there is sometimes a fine line separating cosmetics from drugs, which DO require FDA approval. For instance, beauty products that are intended to remove wrinkles or increase collagen are treated like drugs or medical devices by the FDA, and must be FDA approved before they are marketed to Americans: “Under the law, cosmetics must be safe when consumers use them according to product labeling, or the way in which the products are customarily used. But the law does not require cosmetics to be approved by FDA before they go on the market. Drugs, however, must have FDA approval for both […]

Choosing to get liposuction is can be an exciting, and oftentimes scary, decision. Preparing your body and mind for your procedure is almost as important as the surgery itself. Before you get liposuction, here are a few things to keep in mind: Get a medical examination In order to verify that you are in good health and ready for this procedure, your personal physician should complete a health history and physical exam. This is not only for your protection, but for your peace of mind as well. Make sure to bring this with you to your liposuction appointment, or send it beforehand if required. Note your medicine intake Make sure your doctor knows all of the medicines and natural health products you are currently taking, because they may increase risks during surgery. Your doctor may require that you stop taking all drugs, medicines, herbs and non-prescribed vitamins, including aspirin or Tylenol, before surgery. Make sure you understand the process Before you scare yourself with online videos, ask your doctor to explain the liposuction process so you know what to expect. This will give you a checklist for things to look out for before and after your surgery and give your […]

Dermaplaning, an exfoliation procedure, removes dead skin and unwanted hair from the surface of your skin. A tool is used to remove the outer layer of skin and any peach fuzz hair on your face to give your face a younger appearance. While most people use Dermaplaning because they want to have younger looking skin, there are many added benefits. Dermaplaning is very safe. A Dermaplaning facial doesn’t use any chemicals so it is non-abrasive. This also makes it great for people who can’t use many products on their face due to their sensitive skin. Because of this, it can be used on any skin type. You should notice that your skin is much smoother to the touch. As it gets rid of the dead skin cells on your face, it exfoliates your skin, leaving it looking flawless and feeling smoother. It also removes facial hair. Not only can this hair be unsightly (and unwanted), it can also trap dirt and oils. This can make your face appear oily, no matter how often you clean it. Dermaplaning can also help fight the signs of aging. It can help decrease fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and other signs of aging that you may […]

More and more people are getting a liposuction procedure to get the body that they have always wanted. You can look almost anywhere to find people with success stories. However, there are also plenty of horror stories too! In order to make sure that your liposuction procedure goes well, it is important that you find the right surgeon. Here are some tips to help you. Don’t be afraid to ask your friends and other people that you know who they used when they got their own liposuction procedure done. Most people know someone (or know someone who knows someone) who has gotten some work done. Ask them who they used and if they would recommend them for you. A bad recommendation is just as good because you know where you shouldn’t go. If you don’t know anyone, look online. Many people love to leave reviews online so you should have no problem finding reviews for almost anything, including plastic surgeons. Look for ones with glowing reviews, though you should expect to find a few negative reviews too. People love to complain so negative reviews are more common than positive ones! Also, one person can’t make everyone happy. It is impossible, […]

Your skin is the biggest organ in your body. That means it is pretty important! It is crucial to keep your skin in good shape. But, if we are honest, we often leave our skin to take care of itself. It’s time to start caring for our skin! Here are six habits to avoid: Habit #1: Forgetting to put on sunscreen. We often do not realize how much our skin is exposed to harmful sun rays. Of course, getting sunshine is good for both our mood and our overall health. But if we want to talk about overall health, we need to take our skin into account. Too much exposure to sun can and will damage your skin cells. The damage will start slow; but five or ten years down the road, you will wish you had taken better care of your skin. Remember that even when it is cloudy, sun rays can still seep through. So take a minute before you go outside to put on sunscreen. It will be worth it. Habit #2: Eating processed food. Believe it or not, our eating habits make a big difference for the health of our skin. The processed foods that you […]

You’ve tried it all – lipstick, gloss, and every other lip product under the sun; everything that’s advertised to make your lips look fuller and better contoured. Nothing has worked! You’ve just succeeded in wasting lots of money on a dream of full lips. However, the thin lips you were born with aren’t going to get any fuller on their own. In fact, as you age, it is likely they are going to get worse, manifesting other undesirable traits like wrinkles. Thin lips not only limit your available cosmetic options, but they make it so you constantly look like you are in a bad mood. If you want to stop mean mugging everyone you meet accidentally with thin, severe-looking lips, then it may be time to consider lip augmentation. If there is one cosmetic procedure that those open to cosmetic surgery may seek to avoid, it could be lip augmentation. At this point, we have all seen the joke on TV – about the woman with augmented lips that looks like she got stung by a bee. Yes, it’s funny, but that is not what lip augmentation is. While this is something you may want to avoid, only bad plastic […]
