What is Liposuction

Liposuction – the removal of fat through mechanical suction – is proven to be very safe and effective in all properly selected patients, for both men and women.

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure designed to remove unwanted fat deposits from specific areas of the body resistant to reduction by diet or exercise. This procedure is commonly used to reshape the chin and neck, torso, arms, upper abdomen and lower abdomen, buttock, flanks, hips, knees and ankles.

Most of us gain one pound per year due to the slowing of our metabolism after age 25. Unfortunately, these extra pounds are usually accumulated around the waist in men and in the buttock and thigh areas of women. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight reduction. For best results, patients should be relatively close to their ideal weight for their body frame.

Although youthfully firm, elastic skin will generally give best results, liposuction can be performed with great success on the over fifty group. Overly loose or sagging skin will not easily reshape so, additional surgery may be recommended to remove the excess skin and tighten muscles. Dr. Apesos may recommend multiple procedures over time to achieve the desired shape.

Laser Liposuction

The newer Smart-Lipo laser-assisted liposuction technique is routinely used by Dr. Apesos to remove fat with less bleeding, bruising, and skin discoloration.

At the beginning of your liposuction procedure, Dr. Apesos will mark the areas chosen for treatment. The incision is just large enough to insert a thin hollow tube called a cannula. The cannula is attached at the opposite end to a machine creating a very strong vacuum. The surgeon then manipulates the cannula to loosen and remove the fat deposits and fluids.

Tumescent liposuction techniques are used for the removal of fatty tissue through tiny punctures in the skin. The injected solution expands and magnifies the fat cells, making removal of a larger volume of fat cells possible without the need for any blood transfusions. The fatty tissue removed during liposuction can be recycled for use in other cosmetic procedures. Be sure to ask Dr. Apesos to describe its use for other cosmetic enhancements.

Postoperative weight gain will create new fatty deposits in existing fat cells, but since the body does not regenerate fat, the fat cells removed from problematic areas during liposuction are removed for life. When patients follow a nutritious, disciplined diet and maintain an active lifestyle that includes plenty of exercise, the new contours will be maintained with weight control.
